About

What Is Atlas MD WhatsApp Bot?

What the project is, from its repository.

Atlas MD is an open-source WhatsApp Multi-Device bot developed by FantoX and Team Atlas. Built around the Baileys WhatsApp library, the project combines AI chatbots, group management, media downloading, anime reactions, sticker tools and a plugin system.

One of its biggest highlights is its integration with three AI services: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It also supports a group chatbot that responds to mentions and a direct-message chatbot that users can enable or disable.

The project is maintained through the GitHub repository FantoX/Atlas-MD, which showed 228 stars and 943 forks at the time of this review. Its README describes the bot as Baileys v7 ready, with full LID resolution support for owner detection and chatbot mentions.

Unlike bots that require a separate pairing website, Atlas MD uses a SESSION_ID environment variable. The project generates a QR code when it starts, allowing users to connect their WhatsApp account directly.

Features

Atlas MD Bot Features

The capabilities listed in the project GitHub README.

Triple AI Integration

Chat with ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic) and Gemini (Google). Multiple API keys per service can be separated by commas, and the bot rotates keys to distribute usage and reduce rate limit issues. API access may require separate credentials and can involve provider limits or charges.

Group and DM Chatbot

A group chatbot that responds when users mention the bot, plus a direct message chatbot for private conversations that can be toggled on or off.

Universal Media Downloader

Download from TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter/X, Threads, YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud, MediaFire, Mega, Sfile and Videy. Availability may depend on the source platform and current implementation.

Anime Reactions

26 animated GIF reactions such as bite, bonk, hug, kiss, slap, pat and cry.

20 Bot Characters

Switch between bot personalities including Power, Makima, Zero Two, Miku, Rem and the default Atlas. Character modes change the personality of chatbot interactions.

Group Moderation

Silent ban for users and groups (the bot simply ignores them), anti-link protection, welcome and goodbye messages, tag all members, promote and demote, an admin role hierarchy, group info and invite links, and Self, Private and Public bot modes.

Sticker Toolkit

Create stickers from images and videos, meme stickers, quote stickers and an emoji mixer.

Media Converters

Video to MP3, Image to PDF, Sticker to Image, Sticker to GIF or MP4, Media to URL and URL to QR conversions.

Search and Utilities

Google Search, Wikipedia, YouTube Search, Lyrics, Weather, GitHub Search, Wallpapers and Ringtones.

Live Plugin Store

Install and uninstall plugins from URLs with the -install command, without a full bot restart. Example plugins cover RPG commands, code execution, audio editing, image editing, text-to-speech and logo creation. Only install plugins from sources you trust, because a plugin can execute code with access to the bot runtime and configuration.

MongoDB Powered

All settings persist in MongoDB: bans, moderators, bot modes, chatbot settings, welcome configuration and character settings. The project also documents a MongoDB garbage collection interval and message cache settings through environment variables.

FFmpeg Bundled

FFmpeg ships through the ffmpeg-static dependency, so the documented setup does not require a separate manual FFmpeg installation.

Session

What Is SESSION_ID in Atlas MD?

A different session setup from bots with a pairing website.

Atlas MD uses a different session setup from bots that provide a separate pairing website. The repository documents SESSION_ID as any random string that acts as the bot session key. It is configured through the .env file or the hosting platform environment variable settings.

SESSION_ID is not your WhatsApp phone number or WhatsApp verification code. It is a project configuration value used by Atlas MD session mechanism. Create your own unique random string instead of copying someone else value.

According to the README, the bot generates a QR code in the browser when it starts, which you scan through WhatsApp Linked Devices. The README also explains that changing SESSION_ID and restarting the bot generates a new QR session. Lost your session? Change SESSION_ID to any new random value in .env and restart.

Setup

How to Set Up Atlas MD

The installation documented in the official repository. Key environment variables: PREFIX (command prefix, default -), MODS (owner numbers, required), MONGODB (connection URL, required), SESSION_ID (random string, required), TENOR_API_KEY (required for GIF commands), and the optional GEMINI_API, OPENAI_API and CLAUDE_API keys, plus PACKNAME, AUTHOR and PORT.

01

Clone the Repository

Run: git clone https://github.com/FantoX/Atlas-MD and then cd Atlas-MD

02

Install Dependencies

Run: npm install

03

Create the Environment File

Copy the example configuration with: cp .env.example .env, then open .env and configure the required values.

04

Configure Environment Variables

Set PREFIX, MODS, MONGODB, SESSION_ID and TENOR_API_KEY, and add the optional AI keys (GEMINI_API, OPENAI_API, CLAUDE_API) for the AI features you want. The README marks the main configuration variables as required and the AI credentials as optional, though optional credentials are needed for their corresponding features.

05

Start Atlas MD Using PM2

Install PM2 globally with npm install -g pm2, then start the bot with: pm2 start ecosystem.config.cjs

06

Connect WhatsApp

When Atlas MD starts, it generates a QR code in the browser. On your phone, open WhatsApp, go to Linked Devices, select Link a Device, scan the QR code and wait for the bot to connect. Check the terminal or hosting logs to confirm the bot started successfully.

Deployment

Atlas MD Deployment Options

The hosting references in the README.

The GitHub README provides one-click deployment references and video tutorials for Heroku, Railway, Koyeb and Replit, plus manual VPS installation using Node.js and PM2. Follow the current README and the relevant platform instructions rather than relying on outdated hosting guides.

A VPS deployment gives users more control over the runtime, process management and server configuration, but it also requires server administration and ongoing maintenance. Hosting costs, free tier limits and availability depend on the provider. A deployment button or tutorial does not guarantee free or unlimited hosting.

Free & Safety

Is Atlas MD Free and Safe to Use?

License, running costs and the README warnings.

Atlas MD is an open-source project under the MIT license, so its source code can be inspected and reused under the applicable license terms. However, running the bot may involve separate costs: hosting or VPS expenses, MongoDB usage beyond available free limits, OpenAI API usage, Claude API usage and other third-party services. The bot software being open source does not mean every external service or deployment option is free.

Atlas MD README includes a warning that the bot is not made by WhatsApp Inc. and warns that excessive use may result in a WhatsApp account ban. The project also states that its support is focused on deployment and setup rather than custom development.

Review the repository and its dependencies, and use your own MongoDB connection string.

Never share your .env file or API keys, and protect your SESSION_ID and generated authentication data.

Install plugins only from trusted sources, and monitor your hosting logs and bot activity.
